Winter solstice arrives

The astronomical winter has arrived with a light scattering effect sunset across the upper North Island this evening. The official winter solstice is at 9:13pm tonight as the South Pole reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun, making it the shortest daylight and longest night of the year.
