M1.9 earthquake under the Firth of Thames

Interesting little earthquake under the Firth of Thames last night. The magnitude 1.9 occurred at 8:25pm and was pinpointed by GeoNet on the extension of the Kerepehi fault line that runs from the Hauraki Plains to Waiheke Island. A quake this size is unlikely to have been felt.

38 quakes have been recorded in this area since GeoNet records began which includes the small swarm of 8 quakes in 1963. The last quake to occur under the Firth of Thames on this fault line was a Magnitude 1.3 on 12th September 29th March 2020.
