Bay of Plenty earthquake rattles the upper North Island

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake at a shallow depth of 5km has rattled areas around the Hauraki Gulf at 3:47am this morning, being felt moderately across the Coromandel peninsular, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Waiheke Island and the Hibiscus Coast. The epicentre of the quake was in the Bay of Plenty around 130 km east of Whitianga, 63 km north of Whakaarai, White Island.

The primary seismic wave arrived at our measuring device on the North Shore in Auckland 32 seconds after the fault rupture, with the stronger secondary seismic wave arriving 25 seconds later. A precursor 266km deep foreshock at a magnitude 3.7 occurred at 3:24am which seems to be related to the stronger magnitude 5.2 quake. GeoNet registered the quake at 5.2, USGS registered 5.5 and our private network came in at 5.3. As of 6:00am there has been 12 aftershocks.
