The Asperitas clouds appear over the upper North Island

The rare 'Asperitas clouds' arriving over the upper North Island on Friday. The cloud type was officially added to the International cloud Atlas by the World Meteorological Organization in 2017, the first new cloud added since cirrus intortus in 1951. The appearance of the clouds generally occurs when there is lots of instability aloft.
