A large magnitude 6.1 earthquake has occurred this evening at 7:37pm on the Hikurangi subduction zone off the east coast of the North Island. .
The primary seismic wave arrived within 60 seconds into our Auckland based seismometer after the rupture and was felt across the Bay of Plenty, Coromandel Peninsula, Gulf Islands and Auckland
The epicentre of the quake was 10km south of the 5th March magnitude 7.3 quake which makes it highly likely to be an aftershock of the 5th March quake. Since 5th March there have been 2,670 aftershocks, with tonight's quake the 2nd largest of those aftershocks.
