An ongoing earthquake swarm 25km to 30km east of Whitianga has had a total number of 20 earthquakes in the last  2 and half months. The largest quake in this sequence was a magnitude 3.3 on 21st September 2022.

35km east of Whangarei - 26th December 2018 to 3rd May 2022

An ongoing earthquake swarm 35km to 50km east of Whangarei Heads has had a total number of 119 earthquakes in the last 41 months. The largest quake in this sequence was a magnitude 4.1 on 10th February 2019. As a comparison, the next closest sized swarm in the Gulf occurred in 2007 with 14 shallow earthquakes over a 4 month period.
