Tropical cyclones transition from the tropics and become extratropical cyclones with a long history of directly impacting the upper North Island of New Zealand. Regional met agencies name a tropical cyclone which on most occasions retains it's name when it transitions beyond the tropics into New Zealand waters. Below is the a history of the modern day tracked cyclones in the satellite era that have had significant impact of the Upper North Island since 1968. Many other major less scientifically observed cyclones have hit the upper North Island pre-1968, more details on these storms can be found here
