Polar vortex strengthens, a sign of the approaching winter

The most powerful weather system on the planet is gaining strength everyday as we head towards winter. The Stratospheric Polar Vortex high above the Antarctic continent has started to develop westerly winds around 150 to 200km/h. These high atmospheric winds will continue to strengthen in the weeks ahead, especially after the astronomical polar night arrives on 11th May. This seasonal polar beast is a major climate driver of our weather over the next 6 months and assists in enhancing the westerlies off the Tasman into the upper North Island.
